Male and female health

Gender-specific health

Women and men have distinct biological, physiological and hormonal differences that affect their health needs and risks. Addressing these differences helps ensure more effective prevention, diagnosis and treatment of health conditions with unmet needs. Gender-specific health care promotes equality, can improve health outcomes, and provides tailored care that respects individual needs. Our focus areas include reproductive health, contraceptives, endometriosis, benign prostatic hyperplasia and hyperactive bladder. By addressing these specific health concerns, we aim to deliver more personalised and effective health-care solutions, contributing to better overall well-being for both genders.

Supporting male and female health

Innovative male and female contraceptives

New non-hormonal and hormonal contraceptive methods can contribute to improved maternal and child health, allow people to plan their families according to their circumstances and support gender equality by giving both partners the ability to share responsibility for family planning and control over their reproductive futures. We offer a unique service in the discovery and development of new contraceptive approaches based on several years of collaboration with leading scientific networks:

  • Fertility testing in mice (mating studies); PK/PD studies
  • Generation of mouse oocytes via superovulation
  • IVF, sperm-egg fusion and early egg fertilisation monitoring (Ca2+ waves)
  • Full battery for sperm function characterisation using human or mouse spermatozoa (vitality, motility measuring via CASA, energy measurements, capacitation, acrosomal reaction, hyperactivation, sperm-egg interaction)
  • Target identification and selection (driven by literature/database search and phenotypic screening in humans) as well as target validation
  • Reproductive phenotyping of genetically modified mice.

Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a common yet often underdiagnosed condition that significantly impacts the health and quality of life for many women. It can cause severe pain, infertility and long-term health complications. Despite its prevalence, the causes of endometriosis remain poorly understood, and effective treatments are limited. Research is crucial for developing better diagnostic tools, improved treatments and a deeper understanding of the condition's biology, ultimately to enhance the lives of those affected and advance women's health care. Our research services include:

  • Ectopic endometrial implant models
  • LPS-induced inflammatory pelvic pain models (non-reflexive via dynamic weight bearing (DWB); rat)
  • By leveraging these models, we aim to contribute to the advancement of endometriosis research and women's health.
