Clinical data management is the process of collecting, cleaning, validating and managing clinical trial data so it is accurate, complete, consistent and ready for analysis. The CDM team helps ensure that clinical trial data is high quality and reliable.
CDM should start during study planning and set-up. Early involvement helps prevent downstream issues and supports faster database lock and analysis readiness.
This means data management works alongside the study team from an early stage rather than being added later as a separate step.
Main CDM activities include study set-up in the electronic data capture (EDC) system, edit checks and validations, query management, data reconciliation, coding, data review, database freeze and database lock.
Database lock is a controlled milestone at which the clinical database is finalised following data cleaning and approval. After database lock, no further changes can be made unless formal procedures are followed.
